Youth policy in Latvia is based on the Youth Law, which came into force in 2009. Its goal is to improve the quality of life for young people (aged 13-25) by fostering their initiatives, participation in decision-making, and public life. The policy is founded on seven core principles: participation, information accessibility, equal opportunities, consideration of youth interests, favorable economic preconditions, integration, and mobility.
The policy's implementation is guided by the Guidelines for the Development of Children, Youth and Family for 2022-2027. The main strategic directions are: developing a high-quality system for youth work, promoting broader and more active youth participation, facilitating skill acquisition for the job market, and supporting the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities.
The State Youth Policy Program supports these goals by providing financial, methodological, and informational resources. Its key measures are aimed at strengthening youth work at the local government level and promoting active civic and political participation, as well as greater involvement in decision-making, including through support for youth organizations and student self-governments.
